Becoming a Councillor

You could be a Conservative Borough Councillor.

Photo of Richard Henderson My name is Richard Henderson I am the Chairman of the Luton Conservative Association.

Councillors are vital to our relationship and dialogue with our community. It is a position of responsibility and accountability, requiring acumen, skills and commitment.

We welcome all people interested in becoming a Councillor. We have information available on what is involved, we will have an informal discussion and introduce you to existing Councillors - all so that you can make an informed decision.

The role of being a Councillor is time-consuming, there is no doubt, but it can be done around existing commitments if the will is there to do so. In the first instance, you would be attending meetings of the Council committees, you would not be on all of them, and some meetings are in the evenings. There are also other meetings on which you might be a Council representative, such as Safer Neighbourhood Groups, in which you engage with partner organisations and your community. You could reasonably expect to need 15 hours a week to prepare for meetings, attend them and to contribute.

As an elected Conservative representative, you are also an advocate of the Party - a public representative of what we stand for. As such, there are Group decisions of a collective binding nature, but not mitigating your role as a representative of your Ward. You would be expected to attend and support your local Conservative fundraising functions, and take an active part in campaigning and leafleting - not just for your own ward but in all local Party activities.
The selection process, and process for re-selection, assesses your own suitability and then your record as a Councillor in these respects. This is not overbearing, it is to ensure that we have the best representatives for our community and that we continue to serve to best effect.

Being a Councillor is an exciting role. You come into contact with so many people, and can make a real and valuable difference in your community. If you are interested, no matter how speculative, come and have a chat with us and we will put before you all the information you need. If you then choose to become a Council candidate, we will give you all the support that you need. This is a serious undertaking, but it is one which brings much reward to you and to your community. We look forward to discussing this further with you.
