Green Belt West of Luton
Wednesday, September 30, 2009
Luton Conservatives have been active in campaigning against further development. Please see recent article by Nigel Huddleston PPC Luton South below.
In actively campaigning against these proposed developments Luton Conservatives have been out on the ground, speaking at protest marches and at public meetings. It was disappointing that other party's either do not take part or attacked the local Conservative position in the press from the safety of their armchairs in spite of these facts. This issue is far more important to the people of Luton than petty political points scoring.

Speaking at the event (Sunday May 4th 2009 organized by local campaigning group KEOLG - Keep East of Luton Green), Nigel Huddleston told demonstrators that: "The plans are being imposed on the area as part of the government's regional house building targets - targets that an incoming Conservative government has committed to scrap. But, as the general election is still a year away I encourage local residents to participate fully in the current consultation process by sending in their comments to the local committee responsible for assessing the plans and considering public opinion."

Nigel's recent article:

Proposed West of Luton Development - Public Meetings

West of Luton - proposed development.  Have your say.

Over the next two weeks there will be public meetings in Caddington and Slip End to discuss a proposed development to the West of Luton.

As readers of this website will know, I have been leading a campaign against unwanted development on green belt to the East and indeed all around Luton for several years now, and I am pround that the Conservative Party have adopted a policy that would considerably reduce the pressure to build on our beloved green by scrapping Labour's centrally imposed housing development targets that are the result of the ridiculous spatial strategies and replacing them with more locally based planning schemes giving local people a much greater say.

The Shadow Environment Minister, Caroline Spellman, has also written to all councils encouraging them to put major housing development plans on hold until after the next election - by which time a new government will be in place, the present housing targets will be scrapped, and the decisions on such things will be put back much more in local hands.

We all know we need more housing, but I believe we should be focusing on the acres of derelict brownfield sites in the centre of Luton first, and on filling the nearly two thousand empty homes already in Luton before we concrete over greenbelt.

I encourage all local residents to go along to the meetings and have their say:  The meetings will be at Caddington Village School on Wed 30th September at 7:30 pm, and at Slip End Village Hall on Friday 9th October at 7:30 pm.
